Decks, pergolas, doors, built-in wardrobes and timber repairs for homes across Belconnen. Carpenter Canberra works in all 27 suburbs, from Aranda, Cook and Weetangera through Kaleen, Giralang and Evatt to Holt, Macgregor, Dunlop and Strathnairn, and we check the ACT approval rules and the asbestos question for older homes before we quote.
Most Belconnen jobs follow the age of the house. In the older suburbs that means new deck boards and steps, rehung doors, and floor and fence repairs under mature gums; on the smaller blocks of the newer western estates it's usually a first deck, a pergola for shade or a built-in robe.

We price each job after seeing it or photos of it, and put the price and what's included in writing before work starts. As a guide, a Canberra deck builder publishes $250 – $350 per m² for a merbau deck installed, and a national price guide lists $180 – $350 per door for labour to swap an internal door on an existing frame in Canberra (checked 8 October 2026; GST not stated). The deck cost guide, door installation costs and carpenter rates have the detail.
How we quote a job in Belconnen
- Tell us the job: the size or quantity, photos, and the year the house was built.
- We check the rules first: whether it's exempt from building approval, and whether asbestos has to be identified before anything is cut.
- Price in writing: the price, materials and clean-up are agreed before work starts.
Belconnen homes from the late 1960s and 1970s
By 1967, Belconnen's first residents were moving into Aranda and Macquarie.
The ACT Heritage Register describes Aranda, the first residential suburb built in Belconnen, as "predominantly made up of individual houses set amongst a native treed landscape".
Most Belconnen suburbs were named between 1967 and 1975, according to the gazettal dates kept by Archives ACT. Lawson followed in 1986 and Dunlop in 1993, and Strathnairn and Macnamara were added later still. By our reckoning, many houses in the first suburbs are now 50 to 60 years old.
In our view, that's the age when the original timber starts asking for attention: deck boards and handrails past their best, doors that no longer close cleanly, worn skirting and architraves, and floorboards that need patching rather than a new floor. See deck repairs, doors and timber floor repairs.
Belconnen is still mostly houses. At the 2021 Census, separate houses were 69.4% of occupied private dwellings, semi-detached, row and terrace houses and townhouses 17.3%, and flats or apartments 13.2%. Owners held 28.7% of homes outright, a higher share than in Gungahlin, the inner north or Molonglo, by our comparison of the same Census tables.
Heritage homes in Cook's Wybalena Grove and in Aranda
The ACT Heritage Council provisionally registered the Wybalena Grove Precinct in Cook with effect from 2 April 2026 (NI2026-171). It covers 105 houses across 13 hectares, "predominantly semi-detached", designed by Sydney architect Michael Dysart in the "Sydney Regional Style" and built by a co-operative housing society in the 1970s. As at October 2026, the final registration decision is still pending.
The notice lists "Dark stained timber awning sash windows and clerestory windows" among the precinct's attributes, and records that past changes include "the installation of timber decking, courtyard fencing, balconies, additional windows, and solar panels". The Heritage Council may make heritage guidelines for the place, and ACT Heritage gives advice on proposed works. If you own one of these houses, talk to ACT Heritage before we replace a deck, a courtyard fence or a window.
In Aranda, a three-bedroom house "designed by Romberg and Boyd Architects, with Robin Boyd as the design partner, in 1968-69" is on the ACT Heritage Register, as is Paterson House. The Boyd entry notes that the aesthetic of Aranda's architect-designed houses "is predominantly of the Sydney School".
Loose-fill asbestos in Belconnen's older suburbs
Loose-fill asbestos insulation went into Canberra homes "between 1968 and 1978–79", a period that overlaps the naming of most Belconnen suburbs. By our count of the ACT Government's list of affected residential properties (dated 1 July 2022), 282 of the 1,029 homes listed were in Belconnen, more than in any other Canberra district. Flynn and Macgregor had 26 each, and Melba 23.
That list covers homes that contain or have contained loose-fill, and most have since been demolished. By our count, 8 of the 17 properties still on the ACT's register at 30 June 2026 are in Belconnen. Any carpentry at a property on the register is work for a licensed ACT builder, not for us.
Bushfire mapping and tree cover across Belconnen
By our check of the ACT Government's 2026 Bushfire Prone Area map, some land in 24 of Belconnen's 27 suburbs falls inside it. That doesn't put every block inside. Access Canberra's construction note on Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) requirements applies the BAL objective to "a Class 10a building or deck associated with a Class 1 building", and where a BAL has been identified for the block, construction has to follow that level. Look up your block on ACTmapi before we plan a new deck.
Belconnen's tree canopy covered 23.43% of its land in 2025, down from 24.47% in 2020, according to the ACT Government's canopy report. The cover is far from even: Aranda (38.03%), Cook (35.51%) and Bruce (34.04%) are the leafiest suburbs, while Strathnairn sits at 10.51% and Macnamara at 3.07%.
Approvals and older homes
The ACT's approval rules are the same across Canberra: a low deck, an open pergola, a timber fence up to 1.8 m and most internal carpentry don't need a building approval, and anything structural needs a licensed builder. Our deck and pergola approval guide sets out the limits, and the asbestos guide covers the checks for homes built before 2003.
