Carpenter rates in Canberra

What carpenters charge per hour and per job, why Canberra carpenters rarely publish an hourly rate, and how to get a price you can compare.

  • Carpenters: $85 – $155 an hour (metro, national)
  • Call-out or minimum charge: $70 – $120
  • Internal door labour in Canberra: $180 – $350

The short answer

We couldn't find a Canberra carpenter who publishes an hourly rate or call-out fee. A national quotes marketplace lists $85 to $155 an hour for carpenters and joiners in metro areas, and a call-out or minimum charge of $70 to $120, excluding materials (published 18 March 2026, checked 8 October 2026; GST not stated). Most carpentry is priced per job after the carpenter has seen the work.

A national quotes marketplace's 2026 rate guide (published 18 March 2026), checked 8 October 2026. It says its rates "include standard overheads but not materials" and are indicative ranges for licensed, insured tradespeople; it doesn't say whether GST is included or give a Canberra figure. We found no Canberra carpentry business that publishes an hourly rate or call-out fee.

The same guide says general maintenance and repair work, such as fitting doors, replacing skirting or building a basic deck, typically sits between $85 and $140 an hour in metro areas, and specialist joinery or staircases higher.

Why most carpentry is priced per job

An hourly rate only tells you half the story: one carpenter might hang a door in two hours, another in three. For a defined job, a fixed price in writing lets you compare quotes on what you'll actually pay. These per-job and per-square-metre prices are the ones we found published for Canberra:

Per-job and per-square-metre prices from a national marketplace guide (last reviewed June 2026) and a Canberra deck builder (updated August 2025), checked 8 October 2026. Neither says whether GST is included. Most carpentry is quoted per job, after the carpenter has seen it or photos of it.

What changes a carpenter's price

Materials

Hourly rates usually exclude materials. Doors, decking boards, robe systems and trims are priced on top, either supplied by the carpenter or bought by you.

Small jobs and minimum charges

A call-out or minimum charge covers travel and setting up. Grouping several small jobs into one visit usually costs less than separate call-outs.

The age of the house

Older homes have frames that have moved and walls that aren't square, which adds fitting time. Homes built before 2003 also need asbestos identified before old linings or trims are disturbed.

Access and waste

Carrying materials through a side gate or up stairs takes time, and old timber and offcuts have to go somewhere. Check that removal is in the price.

What a fair carpentry quote includes

  • The scope: exactly what's being built, replaced or repaired
  • The materials, and who supplies them
  • Whether removal of old timber and waste is included
  • Whether the job needs an ACT building approval, and who arranges it
  • Whether GST is included

Structural or approved work

Carpentry isn't a licensed occupation in the ACT, but building work that needs a building approval, and structural repairs, must be done by a licensed builder. Check the licence on the ACT public register before you sign. See the approval guide.

Questions about carpenter rates

How much does a carpenter charge per hour in Canberra?

No Canberra carpenter we found publishes an hourly rate. A national quotes marketplace lists $85 to $155 an hour for carpenters in metro areas and $75 to $135 in regional areas, excluding materials (published 18 March 2026, checked 8 October 2026).

Do carpenters charge a call-out fee?

Many do, or they set a minimum charge. The same national guide lists $70 to $120 for a carpenter's call-out or minimum charge.

Is it cheaper to pay by the hour or a fixed price?

For a defined job, a fixed written price is easier to compare and puts the risk of a slow job on the carpenter. Hourly suits work whose extent isn't known until it's opened up.

Can I supply my own materials?

Usually, yes. Tell the carpenter what you've bought before they quote, so they can check it suits the job.

What's the difference between a carpenter and a builder in the ACT?

Builder is a licensed occupation in the ACT; carpenter isn't. A carpenter can do work that's exempt from building approval, while approved and structural building work needs a licensed builder.
