The short answer
No Canberra wardrobe business we found publishes an installed price. A NSW price guide from The Quote Yard lists $1,000 to $1,500 per linear metre installed for a basic built-in wardrobe and $1,500 to $2,200 for mid-range (published 10 January 2026). A national guide from Mates Rates lists $2,800 to $7,500 for a fully custom 2.4 m sliding robe, supplied and installed (checked 5 November 2026; GST not stated by either).

Built-in wardrobe prices per linear metre
| Wardrobe | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Basic built-in wardrobe, installed | $1,000 – $1,500 per linear metre | The Quote Yard (NSW guide) |
| Mid-range: better internals and doors | $1,500 – $2,200 per linear metre | The Quote Yard (NSW guide) |
| Premium: soft-close throughout, designer fittings | $2,500 – $3,500+ per linear metre | The Quote Yard (NSW guide) |
From two marketplaces that pass jobs to tradespeople, checked 5 November 2026. The Quote Yard's figures are for NSW (page published 10 January 2026) and it publishes no dated ACT figures. Mates Rates' national guide is for supply and installation unless noted and shows no review date. Neither says whether GST is included. We couldn't find a Canberra wardrobe business that publishes an installed price.
By our arithmetic, a 2.4 m wall at The Quote Yard's basic rate would be $2,400 to $3,600 (2.4 × $1,000 and 2.4 × $1,500). That's a guide to the order of cost, not a quote.
How much a built-in robe costs per opening
Both guides also price whole robes. Their figures are listed separately and shouldn't be combined:

Mirror sliding doors and drawer units are left out of this table: the NSW guide gives two different ranges for each on the same page.
What changes the price of a built-in wardrobe
Width and height
Price follows the wall: a floor-to-ceiling robe uses more board and takes longer than one with a bulkhead or open top.
The inside fit-out
Shelves and a hanging rail are the cheapest fit-out. Each drawer adds runners and labour, and soft-close drawers add more.
The doors
Plain sliders, hinged doors, bifolds and mirror or glass panels each sit at different prices.
Materials
White melamine is usually the cheapest carcass; timber veneer and painted finishes cost more.
The room
Out-of-square walls need scribing, an old robe may need removing first, and a pre-2003 home needs an asbestos check before old linings are cut.
For layouts, sliding versus hinged doors and how to measure the opening, see our built-in wardrobe ideas.
Do you need approval for a built-in wardrobe in the ACT?
Usually not. ACT Planning's exemptions for internal alterations cover work where the building class doesn't change, the exterior isn't affected and the structural integrity inside the building isn't affected, among other conditions (ACT Planning). The exemption doesn't list wardrobes by name, so a robe that means removing a wall, or cutting into one that carries load, is a question for a licensed builder.
Removing an old robe in a pre-2003 home
WorkSafe ACT says homes built before 2003 must be assumed to contain asbestos. Tell us the year before an old robe or wall lining comes out. See the asbestos guide.
Questions about built-in wardrobe cost
How much do mid-range and premium built-in wardrobes cost?
A NSW price guide from The Quote Yard, a quotes marketplace, lists $1,500 to $2,200 per linear metre installed for mid-range wardrobes with better internals and doors, and $2,500 to $3,500 or more for premium (published 10 January 2026; GST not stated).
How much does a walk-in robe cost?
Mates Rates, a national jobs marketplace, lists $3,000 to $8,000 for a small walk-in of about 6 m² and $7,000 to $20,000 or more for one of 10 m² or larger, supplied and installed.
Is a flat-pack robe system cheaper?
Usually. Mates Rates, a national jobs marketplace, lists $400 to $900 per opening for a flat-pack system installed, against $1,200 to $2,800 for a semi-custom 2.4 m sliding robe. A built-to-fit robe is scribed to the walls and ceiling, so there are no gaps.
Can you just replace the doors on an old robe?
Yes, if the opening and tracks suit. The Quote Yard's NSW guide lists $400 to $800 for basic melamine sliding doors on a standard opening. Send the opening's width and height and a photo of the tracks.
