From a national jobs marketplace's 2026 price guide, last reviewed June 2026, checked 8 October 2026. It says the figures are "informed by real carpentry and handyman jobs posted" on its marketplace, "cross-checked against current published tradie rate cards", and doesn't say whether GST is included. Its typical quote includes removing the old door, hanging and trimming the new one and fitting the handle; the door itself, a new frame and painting usually aren't. We couldn't find a Canberra business that publishes per-door prices.

By our arithmetic, four internal doors at the Canberra labour range would be $720 to $1,400 (4 × $180 and 4 × $350), before the doors themselves. The same guide says carpenters often discount per door when several are done at once.

What a door installation price usually covers

The guide's typical quote includes:

  • Removing and disposing of the old door
  • Hanging the new door on existing or new hinges
  • Trimming the door to fit
  • Fitting the latch, lock and handle
  • Adjusting it so it swings and closes properly

Usually not included unless you ask: the door itself, a new frame or framing work, painting, plastering around the frame, and upgraded locks.

Doors in older Canberra homes

Frames that have moved

Frames in 1960s and 1970s homes have often moved out of square, so a new door needs trimming and sometimes a new jamb. That's extra time over a straight swap.

Non-standard sizes

Standard internal doors are 2040 mm high, but older openings can differ. Measure the opening before buying, or have the carpenter measure.

Asbestos around old frames

Homes built before 2003 must be assumed to contain asbestos (WorkSafe ACT), which matters if a frame or wall lining is being cut. See the asbestos guide.

New openings

A new or widened doorway over 2 m, or one in a load-bearing wall, needs a building approval and a licensed ACT builder.

Questions about door installation cost

How much does it cost to replace an internal door in Canberra?

A national guide's Canberra row lists $180 to $350 per door for labour to swap an internal door on an existing frame, plus the door itself (last reviewed June 2026, checked 8 October 2026; GST not stated).

Is it cheaper to buy the door myself?

It can be: you pay labour only and choose the door. Measure the opening carefully first, because cut-to-size doors usually can't be returned.

How much does a front door cost to install?

The same guide lists $250 to $550 for labour on a mid-range front or external door, and $600 to $1,800 to supply and install one. Security hardware and weather seals add to it.

Does a solid-core door cost more to hang?

Yes. Solid-core doors are heavier and need stronger hinges and more careful fitting; the guide lists $200 to $350 for labour against $150 to $280 for hollow-core.

Can you replace several doors at once?

Yes, and it's usually cheaper per door. List how many doors and which rooms when you ask for a price.
